DIY Sun Costume for Kids

 DIY Sun Costume for Kids

You are my sunshine , my only sunshine !

That's what I kept on singing when I saw my tod turned into a cute sunshine for his school fancy dress competition.

Mr. Sun was very happy and looked excited while wearing this Diy Cardboard Sun and a crown.

This DIY is really a special one as its Jordan 1st fancy dress competition . Also the sun costume was made by both, Mommy and Daddy.

I'll be sharing below all it took to make this simple DIY and what materials we used to create this costume.

Materials :
  • Regular Size White Cardboard/ cardstock
  • A round shaped object
  • Scale and Pencil
  • Craft Knife/ Scissors
  • Orange /mustard color and Yellow Acrylic Paint
  • Paint brush and Palette
  • Black Construction paper ( optional Maroon color )
  • Glue
  • Tape and Yellow Satin Ribbon

DIY Sun Costume Instructions :

The idea was to create a simple sun costume that would make my little one comfortable while wearing it and also look cute at the same time.

Here are few steps I took to create this simple Sun DIY  :

  • I used a white cardboard paper and drew a circle at the center of the paper using a round object. (Make sure the round object does not look too big on your kid. )

  • Then, to draw the spooks, dot the edges of the circle 4 cm apart with a scale and pencil.

  • To make the sun rays , figure out the measurement for spooks whether you want the spooks long or short. We made short sunray spooks near the neck area . We used 60 degree set square geometric instrument.
  • Draw the triangle shape spooks joining the dots accordingly .

  • Cut the sun outline with craft knife or scissors .

  • Add mustard and yellow color on the paint palette . Paint the sun rays edges with mustard / orange color.
  • Grab the paintbrush and fill in the circle and rays with yellow paint.

  • Once the circle is fully painted and dried up, make 2 small round shape and a moon shaped cutout out of the maroon construction paper (I originally wanted to use black paper. ) and glue them as 2 eyes and a smiley mouth.

  • Measure the yellow satin ribbon around your child's neck and tape the ribbon at the back of the sun cardboard.

This DIY sun looked exceptionally good !

We did a trial round and made few adjustments with the ribbon depending on Jordy's comfort level.

Making a crown didn't take much effort.

You'll need :
  • Yellow Chart Paper
  • Scale and Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue

That's it !

  • To make sun crown , I used a big sized chart paper . At the edge of the paper, I drew a rectangle shape at the sides .
  • Then , I drew 3 triangles , a big triangle at the center and the other 2 triangles a little small , having an equal size.

  • Cut the outline and measure the crown by placing the paper on your child's head.
  • Now, you can glue the rectangular sides , based on the measurements taken.

Such an easy peasy DIY for your little ones and lots of fun too !

How to prepare for the fancy dress competition :

  1. Boys can wear a yellow long t-shirt and girls can wear a yellow frock or a dress.
  2. Now, wear the DIY Cardboard Sun . Make sure the sun tied around does not poke or irritate your child .
  3. Time to wear a crown 😊
  4. I also got few smiley stickers and made my little wear it on his cheeks , which looked really cute.
  5. Prepare with a small speech or content by repeating the words or sentences  .

All in all , this DIY was magnificent and amazing.
